Pairing Up

So you have decided to breed your guniea fowl.  You will need to know a few starting points.  Firstly female guineas are not fertile, and so cannot breed until they reach two years of age.  Males can breed at a slightly younger age.  Guniea fowl males are very protective of their hens.  Although they will not fight each other, they will fight and kill cockerels of chickens.  It therfore is not wose to house cockerels of chickens with guniea fowl males.

If you are breeding just for the fun of it, there is no need for you to pair up for certain colours, or anything.  People who want to breed to sell, or want particular colours must pair up.  To get the colour you want you must breed a male and female of the saem colour together.  So if you want white, a white male, to a white female, and so on.  You need really a ratio of  around two hens to one male guniea fowl. Good Luck!

Eggs And Chicks

Guinea fowl will often lay a medium sized clutch.  They will sit, though they aren't the best sitters in the world.  However once the eggs have hatched, the mother bird will often abandon the chicks, leaving them to be picked up by oredators.  It is therefore better for a hen to hatch and raise them, or an incubator and a broody system to be used.

Once the chicks are seven days old however they are able to fly.  From birth they are very nimble, making them hard prey to any animal who fancies a bite.  hey are very hardy birds, but like all chicks need warmth, so require a hen, a broody system, or a guniea fowl hen who will look after them.  They feather up quite quickly, though have baby feathers before their adult colours grow through.

The chicks should be fed on chick crumbs, or something similar.  They should go onto growers pellets at six weeks of age, and then onto layers pellets, meal, or amsh at the age of eight-teen weeks.  They can alsi then be moved out to join the rest of the flock if not already intorduced, but can be introduced at around eight weeks.
